What is Homoeopathy?
An individualized system of medicine that focuses on understanding the person, their symptoms and their overall health experience.
Similar suffering.
Individualized care.
A system of medicine with
a long history.
The word Homoeopathy has Greek roots, traditionally associated with the words homoios, meaning "similar", and pathos, meaning "suffering" or "disease".
Homoeopathy was developed by the German physician Dr. Samuel Hahnemann more than two centuries ago. Its practice developed around the principle commonly expressed as "like cures like", traditionally known as Similia Similibus Curentur.
A central feature of the homoeopathic approach is individualization — understanding the particular pattern of symptoms and characteristics presented by each person rather than looking at a disease name alone.

certain symptoms
for remedy selection
In homoeopathic practice, the symptoms associated with a medicinal substance are traditionally compared with the symptoms presented by an individual.
How are homoeopathic medicines studied?
Traditional homoeopathic practice places importance on the systematic observation of substances in healthy individuals. These observations are known as drug provings.
During a proving, the experiences and symptoms reported by participants are recorded and organized. These observations form part of the traditional knowledge base used in homoeopathic practice.
The collected information is traditionally organized in a reference work known as the Materia Medica.

Matching the individual symptom picture.
In traditional homoeopathic practice, the Materia Medica is used as a reference when considering a medicinal substance.
The practitioner studies the symptoms and characteristics presented by an individual and compares them with the recorded characteristics associated with different remedies.
This process of comparison and individualization is an important part of the traditional homoeopathic approach to remedy selection.
A distinctive feature of homoeopathic preparations.
Homoeopathic medicines are traditionally prepared through serial dilution and succussion.
Dilution
The original substance undergoes a series of carefully defined dilutions according to traditional homoeopathic preparation methods.
Succussion
Each stage of preparation traditionally involves vigorous shaking, known as succussion.
Preparation
The resulting preparation is administered according to the homoeopathic system of prescribing.
The proposed mechanisms of action of highly diluted homoeopathic preparations remain a subject of scientific debate. Current scientific evidence does not establish that highly diluted homoeopathic products work beyond placebo effects.
Understanding the individual behind the symptoms.
Detailed case taking is an important part of traditional homoeopathic consultation. It may include information about present complaints, previous health history and family history.
The practitioner may also explore individual characteristics, sensitivities, lifestyle, surroundings and circumstances that may be relevant to the person's health experience.
Clinical examination remains an important part of care.
Homoeopathic consultation may include physical examination, clinical findings and appropriate investigations where required.
These aspects help the practitioner understand the patient's health condition and identify situations that may require conventional medical investigation, referral or additional care.
Individualized understanding
The traditional homoeopathic approach seeks to understand the person's overall symptom picture rather than considering a disease label in isolation.
Constitutional individualization.
One of the defining concepts in traditional homoeopathic practice is the idea of constitutional individualization — considering the person's characteristic symptoms, physical and emotional experiences, health history and individual circumstances when selecting a remedy.
This means that two people with the same medical diagnosis may, within the homoeopathic system, receive different remedies depending on their individual symptom picture.
